I've now experienced the wonders of safety glass up close

I learned something important tonight:
- things that are "bouncing" on the highway are not necessarily soft.
While I was traveling on 95 this evening (lots of traffic around, 60 mph) I had this "bouncing" object, which turned out to be a brick-sized chunk of cement or rock, hit my windshield and shatter it. It amazes me how calm I was when it happened. I didn't swerve the car...I didn't freak out, immediately. I just thought to myself "holy crud! that wasn't a cup bouncing down the road...and look, my windshield has shattered and I'm covered with glass, that sure sucks."
I'm fine. The windshield is not.
There is now a grapefruit sized indentation on the lower left-hand side of my windshield and long spider-web-like cracks reaching to the other side. Thank goodness for safety glass! But even with the safety glass, my dash was covered with tiny bit of broken glass that gleamed like diamonds when the headlights hit them just right. I had little diamonds on my arms. Little diamonds on my jeans. But thanks to my eyeglasses, I DIDN'T have little diamonds in my eyes.
Not the kind of diamonds I wanted for Valentine's.
But I'm okay. The brick/rock/cement thingie only hit the windshield. There is no body damage at all. And, best of all, my insurance will cover all but $50 of the repair. WHAT A NIGHT!

march will be great if you want to come then. there is a st. patrick's day parade down magazine street and on the 12th i am hosting a fancy vegan dinner at my home that joshua ploeg is cooking (he goes on tour cooking vegan food and we met him last year. his food is amazing.) both of those events would be better if you were here to share 'em, but really ANYTIME you can come would be orgasmic!

This has been the weekend of accidents in my family though. My sister fell while ice skating at the same rink I skated on back on "coronation" day...except she fell and hit her head. She has a hair-line skull fracture! She's relatively fine, though...and even though she's feeling the nasty effects of a concussion and has 6 stitches, the doctors don't think she'll need surgery. Not a good weekend.
I'll look into flights and see what deals I can find. I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOU!!!!

I wonder if it shattered so easily because of that "known problem" I was telling you about with Elements? Altho that does sound like a huge thing that hit you..

I'm so glad that ONLY your car was hurt and you weren't! Goody gumdrops for eyeglasses! For as much a pain as I consider mine in this cold weather that makes them fog up every time I go inside a shop or bar, they've probably saved my eyes from tiny projectiles many, many times.
