I've now experienced the wonders of safety glass up close

I learned something important tonight:

- things that are "bouncing" on the highway are not necessarily soft.

While I was traveling on 95 this evening (lots of traffic around, 60 mph) I had this "bouncing" object, which turned out to be a brick-sized chunk of cement or rock, hit my windshield and shatter it. It amazes me how calm I was when it happened. I didn't swerve the car...I didn't freak out, immediately. I just thought to myself "holy crud! that wasn't a cup bouncing down the road...and look, my windshield has shattered and I'm covered with glass, that sure sucks."

I'm fine. The windshield is not.

There is now a grapefruit sized indentation on the lower left-hand side of my windshield and long spider-web-like cracks reaching to the other side. Thank goodness for safety glass! But even with the safety glass, my dash was covered with tiny bit of broken glass that gleamed like diamonds when the headlights hit them just right. I had little diamonds on my arms. Little diamonds on my jeans. But thanks to my eyeglasses, I DIDN'T have little diamonds in my eyes.

Not the kind of diamonds I wanted for Valentine's.

But I'm okay. The brick/rock/cement thingie only hit the windshield. There is no body damage at all. And, best of all, my insurance will cover all but $50 of the repair. WHAT A NIGHT!

Oh my gosh! That's really scary. I'm glad you're not hurt. And that it'll be paid for. But... yikes!

SWEET JESUS! That is so scary! You are so lucky. That could have been terrible. I'm so glad, thank God for safety glass, indeed.

holy shit! are you ok? i hope you were doing something really cool like coming home from Laurel or something. how lucky you are that you didn't get hurt or react badly. did anyone stop to help you? good god almighty. i am so glad you are unscratched.

march will be great if you want to come then. there is a st. patrick's day parade down magazine street and on the 12th i am hosting a fancy vegan dinner at my home that joshua ploeg is cooking (he goes on tour cooking vegan food and we met him last year. his food is amazing.) both of those events would be better if you were here to share 'em, but really ANYTIME you can come would be orgasmic!

I'm ok. I was coming home from something cool, a wonderful pie potluck party. I made little walnut tartlettes. (And I realized that it was actually 395 I was on when the rock hit.) The crazy thing was I didn't even have to pull over, I was able to continue driving like nothing had happen (except for the fact that my windshield was scrunched up and I was covered with glass bits). I was really quite calm, until I got home, that is...I started shacking and crying about 20 minutes after the event. For something bad to happen, it happened in the 'best case scenario' way possible.

This has been the weekend of accidents in my family though. My sister fell while ice skating at the same rink I skated on back on "coronation" day...except she fell and hit her head. She has a hair-line skull fracture! She's relatively fine, though...and even though she's feeling the nasty effects of a concussion and has 6 stitches, the doctors don't think she'll need surgery. Not a good weekend.

I'll look into flights and see what deals I can find. I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOU!!!!

eek. I'm so glad you remained calm!

I wonder if it shattered so easily because of that "known problem" I was telling you about with Elements? Altho that does sound like a huge thing that hit you..

It was a rock the size of a super big gulp cup. I think it would have shattered ANY windshield.

Congrats on keeping your senses! I always thought that I had no survival instinct whatsoever, yet everytime I'm in a wreck or other highway mishap, I remain calm and collected. The shakes afterward are what freak me out. It's amazing what the human body can do. Glad to hear you're okay. But your poor car!

Dear god, that is SO scary.

I'm so glad that ONLY your car was hurt and you weren't! Goody gumdrops for eyeglasses! For as much a pain as I consider mine in this cold weather that makes them fog up every time I go inside a shop or bar, they've probably saved my eyes from tiny projectiles many, many times.

I HATE HATE HATE 95, 395, 495, the mixing bowl - You name it! So sorry this happened to you! We travel that way lots to see my in-laws and I hate it. One time we were on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge and there was a car in the middle lane - dead. We almost plowed into the back of it. Luckily my husband was driving and we could dodge over into the next lane. I saw my life flash before my eyes! And I get even more nervous now that we have little man in the back seat. Do you think anyone threw it off an overpass or was it just some miscellaneous debris?

I think it was misc debris. There's so much construction going on around there...it was probably construction junk.

Aah! I just now read this after all that commenting to your other posts! AAH! That is so dangerous! I am so glad you were okay- I would have been flipping out and crying. I think that all of the interstates here are so intimidating and mean. I always feel like I am in a battle whenever I drive on one.
